Description
Summary:Wavelength integrated surface albedo was monitored every 2.5 meters along two 200 meter transects using a pair of Kipp and Zonen radiometers. Measurements are taken daily or every few days from 5/21-6/25/2009, spanning the time from snow melt through unsafe ice conditions. The transects are on shorefast seasonal ice near the Mass Balance Site. The South transect was on flat, mostly undeformed ice. The Eastern end of the line appeared to be intact ice which had formed under calmer conditions, while the Western half had rafted when a few centimeters thick and appeared to have formed in dirtier, more turbulent seas. The South transect ran from Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) 587519.70W 7920274.01N (zone 4) to 587718.92W 7920261.68N and was roughly a hundred meters offshore from the Mass Balance Site. The North transect was about a kilometer north toward Point Barrow from the Mass Balance site, on a separate floe, running from 7920510.88N 588422.251W to 7920471.49N 588226.646W, again UTM zone 4. The East end of this line was on level ice very similar to the west end of the south line. There was evidence of rafting during early growth and significant sediment was entrained in the ice. The West end of this North transect was ridged and rubbly ice which had been deformed when the ice was 5-10 cm thick, with significant snow drifts. Data Citation: Eicken, H., R. Gradinger, T.
