Description
Summary:This snow depth on sea ice dataset was compiled by the Surface Mass Balance and Snow Depth on Sea Ice Working Group (SUMup). This dataset includes snow depth on sea ice measurements from both hemispheres. This dataset is a community effort to distribute easy to use in-situ data to improve surface mass balance modeling and remote sensing efforts. This dataset is a compilation of work from many individual researchers. The ~14,000 measurements of snow depth on sea ice are from 7 locations off the Antarctic Peninsula in the Bellingshausen sea and ~40 locations directly off the coast of Finland in the Baltic sea. The Arctic represents 78% of the measurements and the Antarctic represents the remaining 22%. The Finnish Meteorological Institute Sea Ice Observers data spans from from 1990-2012 while all the Antarctic data is all from 2007 and, hence, is not shown in a histogram.
