Description
Summary:This dataset consists of echosounder, lipid, material property, and target strength data for krill (Euphausiids) from the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska in 2016 and 2017. Oscar Dyson Cruise Echosounder data. Included in this dataset are backscatter data at multiple frequencies collected by Simrad EK60 echosounders during NOAA AFSC pollock assessment cruises in the Bering Sea in 2016 and the Gulf of Alaska in 2017. Additionally, lipid data from frozen krill specimens collected during the cruises were collected by analyzing the amount and type of different lipids in the specimens by Dr. Rodger Harvey (Old Dominion Univ.). Individual krill had their morphology (length and shape) and material properties (density (g) and soundspeed (h) contrast with seawater) measured while at sea. These animals also were tethered in an experimental aquaria and their backscatter (Target Strength) was collected at different acoustic frequencies. These empirical TS measurements were compared with those from theoretical TS models. The data are organized into three .zip files. krill_lipid_analysis.zip contains an excel file that details the specific results from lipid analysis performed on krill samples, including the lipid molecule name, the specific class each lipid comes from, the fatty acid make up of each lipid, and the calculated mass of the lipid molecule based on mass spectrum measured. krill_material_property_and_TS_summary_data.zip contains subfolders (animal_shapes, g_measurement, h_measurement, stereocamera, ts_measurement, and ts_model) with summary data files for the various measurements that were made on individual krill collected during cruises on the Oscar Dyson in 2016 and 2017 in the eastern Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska respectively. There are readme files in each subfolder providing more detail. oscar_dyson_echosounder.zip contains two word documents detailing raw data collected from both surveys conducted. This data was collected as part of NPRB project 1501.
