Summary: | Current, wind, and temperature data were collected in the Florida Keys passages from FIXED PLATFORMS using meters for direct observations. Data were collected by the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution (HBOI) from 01 February 1984 to 31 July 2001. Transport through the channels is influenced by the tides and winds. Seasonal variations in currents reflect the changing weather patterns in the region. Heat flux measurements were conducted at selected locations. "The purpose of these studies was to define the net circulation, the driving forces and thermal energy signatures of the region. Transport of suspended material, nutrients, and larvae are strongly affected by the water mass movement through the passages of the Florida Keys." Data were reported in major scientific journals.
