Summary: | Temperature profiles were collected from XBT casts from the USS CURTS and other platforms from 30 April 1980 to 24 April 1986. Data were submitted by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) as part of the South Atlantic Bight project. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Universal Bathythermograph Output (UBT) format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/bt.html. The UBT format contains temperature-depth profile data obtained using expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instruments. Cruise information, position, date and time were reported for each observation. The data records are comprised of pairs of temperature-depth values. The XBT data files contain temperature values at non-uniform depths. These depths were recorded at the minimum number of points ("inflection points") required to accurately define the temperature curve. Standard XBTs can obtain profiles to depths of either 450 or 760 m. Special instruments permitted measurements to be obtained to 1830 m. The following was present prior to current abstract edit but does not conform to digital data. This record contains Sofar float (subsurface drifter) data collected during the GUSREX (GUlf Stream Recirculation EXperiment) in the Northern Atlantic. There were 41 deployments from April 30 to December 31, 1980. The data was collected over a period of 6 years from April 30, 1980 to April 24, 1986. The floats were deployed at 700 and 2000 m depths. Additional parameters measured were temperature and pressure. These data were submitted by Dr. Phil Richardson, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). The data is currently available in the C116 Bathythermograph file format of NODC.
