Summary: | Abstract An apparatus is described which allows the mixing of comparatively large volumes (11 per minute) of the solutions of two reactants. Mixing is complete within 10 −2 seconds and the first pH‐determination of the mixture is carried out after this time, using a glass electrode. The acidity constant of true carbonic acid H 2 CO 3 could be so determined by mixing KHCO 3 with HCl and the result is in complete agreement with data from high voltage conductivity measurements. From the pH‐values obtained 5·10 −2 , 27·10 −2 and 54·10 −2 seconds after mixing, the rate of dehydration of H 2 CO 3 was obtained, and it is shown that this dehydration is not simply a first order reaction. A quadratic term is also important within the first quarter of a second. |
