A robotic reflective Schmidt telescope for Dome C

Abstract This paper lays out a wide‐field robotic Schmidt telescope (RST) for the Antarctic site Dome C. The telescope is based on 80/120 cm reflective Schmidt optics, built originally for a space project, and a mosaic of four 7.5 k × 7.5 k 8‐ μ m thinned CCDs from the PEPSI/LBT wafer run. The teles...

Description
Summary:Abstract This paper lays out a wide‐field robotic Schmidt telescope (RST) for the Antarctic site Dome C. The telescope is based on 80/120 cm reflective Schmidt optics, built originally for a space project, and a mosaic of four 7.5 k × 7.5 k 8‐ μ m thinned CCDs from the PEPSI/LBT wafer run. The telescope's total field of view (FOV) would be 5° circular (minimum 3° × 3° square) with a plate scale of 0.7 arcsec per pixel. Limiting magnitude is expected to be V = 21.5 mag in 60 sec for a field of 9 square degrees. (© 2004 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
