The EU now covers 27 states – almost all of Western and Central Europe. Borders between member countries are open under the Schengen system, including nonmembers Norway, Iceland, and Switzerland. Britain, Ireland, and Cyprus stay outside; Romania and Bulgaria are poised to join.
