Description
Summary:A.ci.di.lo.ba.ce'ae, N.L. masc. n. Acidilobus the type genus of the family, suff. ‐ aceae ending denoting a family; N.L. fem. pl. n. Acidilobaceae the family of Acidilobus . Crenarchaeota / Thermoprotei / Acidilobales / Acidilobaceae The family Acidilobaceae belongs to the order Acidilobales together with the family Caldisphaeraceae and at present contains only one genus, Acidilobus . The members of this genus have coccoid cells, with or without flagella. They inhabit terrestrial acidic hot springs, being hyperthermophiles and acidophiles. All known representatives of Acidilobaceae are obligate anaerobes growing on peptides, polysaccharides, and sugars, with or without elemental sulfur as the electron acceptor. Acetate is the major growth product of Acidilobaceae , while molecular hydrogen has never been detected, which is in agreement with the absence of hydrogenase genes in the genome of Acidilobus saccharovorans . The analysis of microbial diversity in acidic hot springs of Kamchatka, Japan, Lassen Volcanic and Yellowstone National Parks, USA showed that Acidilobaceae is a widespread and abundant family of Archaea in these habitats. Type genus : Acidilobus Prokofeva, Miroshnichenko, Kostrikina, Chernyh, Kuznetsov, Tourova, Bonch‐Osmolovskaya 2000, 2007 VP .
