Description
Summary:The Treaty of Portsmouth concluded the 1904–5 Russo‐Japanese War. The negotiations conducted between the two countries at Portsmouth, Maine, from August 10 to September 2, 1905, were acrimonious and protracted. The treaty was signed on September 5 and ratifications were exchanged on November 25 of the same year. The main points of the treaty were: the recognition of Japan's paramount interests in Korea; the withdrawal of the military forces of both sides from Manchuria; the cession by Russia to Japan of its leases on Port Arthur and Dalian (Talien); the transfer of the South Manchuria railway between Changchun(Kwangchentze) and Port Arthur; the cession to Japan of the southern part of Sakhalin Island; and the granting of fishery rights to Japan along the coast of Russian possessions in East Asia. An Agreement on the Delimitation of Sakhalin between Russia and Japan was signed three years later, on April 10, 1908.
