He was a prominent member of the League of Nations assembly, becoming the League of Nations high commissioner for repatriation of prisoners of war in 1920 and in 1921 high commissioner for Russian refugees, and later for refugees. The Nansen passport, an ID document for refugees without citizenship, is named after him. Nansen also led European famine relief to Soviet Russia from 1921 to 1923. In 1922 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. |
