The Russian monk aligned himself from the beginning with the Alaskan native peoples, employing the mission strategy of the Orthodox Church in establishing Christian communities among shamanistic tribes more by example than preaching. The goal was to establish a self‐governing American Church in Alaska respecting and using the native languages and creative arts and enjoying administrative independence within the community of the Orthodox churches. |
