L'auteur, specialiste de l'application des cartes a l'étude de l'histoire de la Russie, traite de diverses cartes etablies a la suite d'expeditions d'exploration faites le long du rivage et dans les iles de la mer de Bering entre 1725 et 1775, environ. Son but est de demontrer que les decouvertes russes furent bien les premieres et que les cartes qui en resulterent etaient exactes, en depit du fait qu'elles aient ete sous-estimees et mem falsifiees par des specialistes etrangers contemporains tant en Russie meme qu'a l'exterieur.
