Class A prediction of Arctic caisson performance

From August 1985 to March 1986, numerical predictions were made of the performance of a mobile Arctic caisson subjected to ice forces. A constitutive model for soil was calibrated, using available laboratory data, and the model incorporated within a finite element computer program. Features of perfo...

A constitutive model for soil was calibrated, using available laboratory data, and the model incorporated within a finite element computer program. Features of performance predicted included: maximum caisson displacement; the modes of internal displacement for drained and undrained conditions; whether the performance would indeed be drained or undrained; and if undrained, where high excess pore pressures would be found. In April 1986, the caisson was subjected to large ice forces approaching the design limit, and the predictions were verified on-site to a remarkable degree. For this problem, physical models predicted an erroneous response.
