Description
Summary:The relevance of carboxylic acids and their derivatives, as well as carbonic acid derivatives, in Nature and in the polymer and drug industries is shown. Some physical properties, such as dipole–dipole interactions and boiling points are compared to the corresponding aldehydes and ketones. The structural features of carboxylic acids, esters, and amides, as well as carbamates and carbonates, are discussed with the aid of VB and MO theories, and experimental bond angles. Their resonance structures and frontier molecular orbitals are described, and conformational analysis for esters and amides is presented.
