Description
Summary:Abstract This chapter introduces the annual cycle of weather at Durham in terms of mean temperatures, rainfall and sunshine, and wind direction and speed. Averages for the current World Meteorological Organization standard 30-year period 1991–2020 are used throughout the book, and in this chapter, they are compared with 30-year averages from nineteenth-century observations at the site. Durham’s climate is considered in its regional context, including the influence of the North Atlantic and the European continent. Use is made of weather indices, including Lamb weather types and the North Atlantic Oscillation index. Reference is made both to Durham’s synoptic climatology as well as to individual spells of weather.
