Description
Summary:Abstract The chapter gives a concise description of Votic, an almost extinct unwritten southern Finnic language. The remnants of the Votic population live in a few villages in the Leningrad province of the Russian Federation. The language is moribund: there are no more than five speakers left and the average age of the speakers is more than eighty. The description is based on the data from the Luuditsa variety of Western Votic. Most of the data comes from field recordings made by the authors in 2001–14. The chapter addresses the most important aspects of Votic, including the vowel harmony, reduced final vowels, replacement of 3pl verbal forms with impersonal forms, and others.
