| Summary: | Abstract The Cheilostomatida comprises the majority of living species of marine bryozoans. With the exception of certain estuarine habitats, and Northern Hemisphere intertidal seaweed habitats, where species of Ctenostomatida may predominate, the cheilostomates everywhere outnumber the heavily calcified Cyclostomatida and the non-calcified ctenostomates. Cheilostomate colonies exhibit an immensely wide diversity of form, and, while colony form may be characteristic for a family or genus, it is only rarely so at the species level. The taxonomy of the group is largely founded on the characters of the constituent zooids of the colony. |
