Summary:Abstract Securely under the seat in front of me stayed my backpack and in it was the paper I had meant to revise and the talk I intended to give: I was looking out of the window-It was late March in 1990 and I in the air travelling from London to Japan, by way of (or near to) the disc of the Arctic Circle. A sector of darkness had passed me—night, I supposed, but from the point of view of time for sleep it had seemed little more than an eclipse. Now over East Asia all of the down slope of the world lay beneath me clear of cloud and I watched the mountains and plains of Siberia slide by below.
