She arrived on the islands in 1879 with her husband, John Warren Beaman, a U. S. government official. At that time the Alaska Commercial Company operated the profitable fur seal industry in the region. Her writings were published posthumously in 1987 as Libby: The Sketches, Letters, and Journal of Libby Beaman, Recorded in the Pribilof Islands 1879-1880 (Council Oak Books).
