Description
Summary:Drawing on new archival sources, this chapter explores Lady Gregory’s audiences via a case study of The Rising of the Moon . It considers the ways in which the same text circulated in what Richard Brodhead refers to as different “cultures of letters”. The discussion traces the play’s journey from page to stage by focusing on four different literary-social worlds: from its first publication in the US-based bilingual magazine An Gaodhal / The Gael in 1903 and its world premiere by an amateur society for the London Irish in 1904 to the text’s reprint in the commemorative issue of Samhain magazine in 1904 and its eventual appearance on the stage of the Abbey Theatre in 1907. This print and production history situates Gregory within a wider, transnational context and opens out rich avenues for future research.
