Description
Summary:Abstract The authors of this article focus on the problem of the activities of the Barents Euro-Arctic Council (BEAC) in the context of maintaining the Vepsian identity. It’s important that Veps, being a people of Euro-Arctic, are recognized as an indigenous ethnic group of Barents region by BEAC. The authors analyze all aspects of Council policy of maintaining the Vepsian people. Although the structure of Council includes The Working Group of Indigenous Peoples (WGIP), the authors argue that too little attention has been paid to the Vepsian issue, compared with Nenets and Saami problematics. Beyond that, a reader is informed about strengths and weaknesses of the BEAC activities in this direction. Finally, article gives recommendations on improving the efficiency of BEAC policy with regard to the Vepsian ethnic group.
