Description
Summary:Type: Bachelor's Thesis (B.Sc.). School: Lomonosov Moscow State University, Faculty of Geography, Dept. of Cartography and Geoinformatics. Supervisors: L. A. Ushakova, I. A. Suetova. Location: Moscow, Russia. English Abstract: Current B.Sc thesis aims at the environmental monitoring and mapping of the Barents and Pechora Seas, Russian Arctic. As a result of the work, several geo-ecological maps were created coveraing the areas of the Barents and Pechora Seas.I. Mapping of the the Barents Sea:1. Geo-ecological zoning of the Barents Sea;2. The content of Cs-137 in the bottom sediments of the Barents Sea;3. Distribution of petroleum hydrocarbons in the bottom sediments of the Barents Sea;4. Content of pesticides and heavy metals in bottom sediments of the Barents Sea;5. PCB content in bottom sediments of the Barents Sea.II. Mapping of the Pechora Sea:1. The geoecological zoning of the Pechora Sea;2. The distribution of foci of oil formation in the bottom sediments of the Pechora Sea;3. The content of Cs-137 in the bottom sediments of the Pechora Sea;4. The distribution of total biomass of diatoms in the coastal part of the Pechora Sea.In compiling these maps, the general geographical conditions of the water areas were analysed: the distribution and characteristics of individual elements of geo- and aqua-systems and the processes of substance transfer between elements of the environment. Furthermore, their significance and the degree of their impact on the overall ecological state of the environment were analysed. At the same time, the attention was focused on the environmental pollution, as well as the reasons for the pollutantion discharge into the Barents and Pechora seas, various sources and possible ways of transport and deposition of the heavy metals, pesticides, petroleum hydrocarbons, radionuclides and other contaminants according to the directions from land to rivers, estuaries, deltas and the continental shelf. As a result, the ecological situation in the region was analysed. On the final geoecological ...
