STEROID HORMONES IN THE PLASMA OF SPAWNED ATLANTIC SALMON (SALMO SALAR) AND A COMPARISON OF THEIR DETERMINATION BY CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL ASSAY METHODS

11-Ketotestosterone, cortisone, and Cortisol were isolated and identified as the principal steroid hormones in spawned male Atlantic salmon plasma and the dihydroxyacetone steroids in spawned male and female Atlantic salmon plasma were determined.A large plasma sample from spawned female Atlantic sa...

The results were in agreement and it was thus shown, contrary to a previous suggestion, that the major steroids have the dihydroxyacetone structure in the side chain and there is no indication of large quantities of steroid lacking the hydroxyl group at C-17.
