Summary: | 11-Ketotestosterone, cortisone, and Cortisol were isolated and identified as the principal steroid hormones in spawned male Atlantic salmon plasma and the dihydroxyacetone steroids in spawned male and female Atlantic salmon plasma were determined.A large plasma sample from spawned female Atlantic salmon was analyzed for adrenocorticosteroids using both the mouse liver glycogen deposition bioassay and the Porter-Silber chemical method. The results were in agreement and it was thus shown, contrary to a previous suggestion, that the major steroids have the dihydroxyacetone structure in the side chain and there is no indication of large quantities of steroid lacking the hydroxyl group at C-17. |
