Description
Summary:The karyotype of a male narwhal (Monodon monoceros) is described. The chromosome number was found to be 2n = 44. The karyotype is similar to all other whale species reported except that of the sperm whale (Physeter catodon), and the killer whale (Orcinus orca). The findings presented here add further support to the concept that the whales may be monophyletic in origin.
