Summary:An arctic–alpine Carex smut, described by Rostrup as Tilletia arctica and later assigned to Cintractia and Ustilago, has completely external sori and has no relationship to any of these genera. It is assigned to Orphanomyces gen. nov. (Ustilaginaceae). A second species, O. vankyi sp. nov., is described from the mountains of Transylvania on Carex acutiformis.
