Summary: | Abstract The appearance of a diurnal hysteresis in snow albedo is a widely reported phenomenon. This note discusses the relative importance of two separate effects: surface morphosis and surface irregularities (sastrugi). It is concluded that surface morphosis is the more important effect of the two in the region of the marginal cryosphere. Surface irregularities probably are the dominant influence only on permanent cryospheric areas such as the Greenland and Antarctic plateaux. |
