The observations were made during ten annual cruises of the icebreaker Shirase for the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition JARE from November to April. The first cruise for the observation departed Tokyo, Japan in November 2010. Since then, the observations have been carried out every year, and the final observation cruise departed in November 2019. The ceilometer emits light vertically upward and measures the intensity of backscattered light from the atmosphere.
