Summary: | The early collections in 1970s-1980s are from the pre-melting period, when there was still a large proportion of multiyear sea ice in the Arctic Ocean, whereas the later collections are mainly from first-year ice. The data sets include sea ice characteristics, ice algae, meiofauna (interstitial fauna) and macrofauna (cryopelagic fauna). Data includes the sea ice-water interface. The Antarctic sea ice biota data are from the period of 1986-1992, based on the Arctovski Station and Ice Station Weddell. Collection methods involved, ice corers, nets and scuba diving below the ice. Collections were done by Dr. Igor A. Melnikov at the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia. Collaborator at the Norwegian Polar Institute is Dr. Haakon Hop.
