This species ranges east to Newfoundland and as far south as Colorado and Massachusetts and recorded from Alaska, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories. It is highly variable in color and wing morphology. Both long and short-winged morphotypes are present. Described from Alaska Melanoplus gordonae Vickery, 1969 now is considered as a synonym of Melanoplus b. borealis (Haberski et al. , 2021).
