Historical-comparative, retrospective, narrative methods were applied, which in combination with the methods of oral history made it possible to reconstruct the practices of water use of the rural community over a long period. The research is based on previously unpublished documents extracted from archives, on the results of field research for 2021-2022; information from open and published sources is used. New data on the history of adaptation of the indigenous population to natural disasters are introduced into scientific circulation, the accumulated social experience of responding to emergency situations is highlighted, which is of practical interest for the programs of further development of the North and the Arctic of the Russian Federation. The study actualizes the need for monitoring, preventive measures to minimize and prevent the consequences of floods that threaten sustainable and safe life in the region.
