From extreme weather to abrupt climate change: Can amplified Arctic ice loss tip the North Atlantic freshwater cycle? Freshwater plays a key role in the Arctic – North Atlantic climate system, linking ice, ocean and atmospheric dynamics. Yet, it has, for the most part, been overlooked as a major player in ocean-climate interactions on weather-type timescales. In this talk, Marilena will first briefly review the influence of North Atlantic freshwater events on medium-term climate trajectories. Marilena will then focus on the drivers and underlying dynamics of North Atlantic freshwater variations. Lastly, Marilena will demonstrate new Arctic feedbacks through atmospheric teleconnections and discuss their potential to trigger a nonlinear, or disruptive, change in the North Atlantic climate. About our speaker: Marilena Oltmanns is a research scientist in Physical Oceanography at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) in UK. Speaker's profile: https://noc.ac.uk/n/Marilena+Oltmanns What is a climate coffee? Climate coffees are relaxed meetings for scientists to exchange ideas, discuss about their latest results and new methods with their fellow scientists. Climate coffees are an initiative of ECRA and Blue-Action. All speakers and topics of the upcoming Climate Coffees: https://blue-action.eu/training/climate-coffees Our newsletter: https://ecra-climate.us20.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=b94f327527c0ce01d605c656f&id=21b1c232e4 Interested in becoming the next speaker?
