TYPE LOCALITY: " Mexico " (= C Kansas, "Quivira"), see Hershkovitz (19576); redesignated as Canadian River valley, E New Mexico (USA), see McDonald (1981:62). DISTRIBUTION: Formerly NW and C Canada, south through USA, to Chihuahua, Coahuila (Mexico). Exterminated in the wild except in Yellowstone Park, Wyoming (USA) and Wood Buffalo Park, Northwest Territory (Canada). Reintroduced widely within native range and in C Alaska. STATUS: CITES - Appendix I and U.S. ESA - Endangered as B. b. athabascae. SYNONYMS: americanus, athabascae, haningtoni, montanae, oregonus, pennsylvanicus, septemtrionalis (sic).
