Summary:The article is devoted to the original types of traditional applied art-gold embroidery and pearl embroidery, in its deep traditions and the widespread of this art in the Russian North. The article deals with the history of the development of the pearl industry in Karelia, provides data on the use of gold and pearl embroidery in products, unique women’s hats and jewellery. The author analyses the materials, various techniques, ornaments and colour solutions of Karelian embroidery. According to its artistic merits, embroidery in the North of Russia is the brightest page in the world history of art. A creative approach to the study of folk values and culture makes it possible to rethink and combine folk art with modern trends in modelling and artistic decoration of clothing contributes to the formation of the designer’s personality. The article materials are intended for researchers and scientists in cultural heritage preservation.
