Central, Indo-West and southern Pacific—Hawaii, southeastern South Africa to Polynesia (Rathbun 1897; Fausto Filho et al. 1966; Coelho & Ramos 1972; Holthuis 1985; Abele & Kim 1986; Coelho et al. 1990; Holthuis 1991; Coelho & Ramos-Porto 1994 -1995, 1998; Melo 1999; Coelho et al. 2007; Silva et al. 2007, 2013, 2020; Alves et al. 2008; Dall’Occo 2010; Gaeta et al. 2015; Cintra et al. 2017; Gaeta & Cruz 2019). Remarks. Previous records from the coast of São Paulo include Santos Bay (MZUSP 10892 in Dall’Occo 2010). This species is locally consumed, but there is no special fishery for it on a commercial scale (Holthuis 1991); it is captured as bycatch with the pink shrimp Farfantepenaeus subtilis in the north coast of Brazil (Cintra et al. 2017). Sequences accession number (GenBank): CCDB 5741—16S (MF490150), COI (MF490044) (Mantelatto et al. 2018)—this sequenced sample is a female collected from Ipojuca, Pernambuco, Brazil.
