Sigwart et al. (2011) demonstrated that Leptochiton is not monophyletic based on molecular analyses of three genes; accordingly Leptochiton s.s. is restricted to the North Atlantic and Mediterranean. I here use Leptochiton s.l. according to the traditional morphological concept.
