Description
Summary:Benthalbella dentata (Chapman, 1939). Northern Pearleye. To 28 cm (11 in) TL or more (Mecklenburg et al. 2002). Japan (Nakabo in Nakabo 2002), to Sea of Okhotsk, and western Bering Sea (Orlov 1998), eastern Bering Sea (58°30’N, 177°52’W) (Maslenikov et al. 2013), and Gulf of Alaska (Johnson 1974), to Isla Guadalupe, central Baja California (Watson and Sandknop in Moser 1996); also at 10°21’N, 96°12’W (Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California), and 10°31.3’N, 126°00’W (Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California). Primarily mesopelagic; depth: 59–1,502 m (196–4,927 ft) (min.: Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California; max.: Shinohara et al. 2009) and perhaps to 2,083 m (6,832 ft) (Milkova et al. 2016). A report of a catch at 3,400 m (11,155 ft, Fedorov 2000 (Personal communication: Russian Academy of Science Ichthyological Collecton at Saint Petersberg)) may be problematic, as this is a mesopelagic species; the specimen may have entered the net above the maximum depth of the tow (Love et al. 2005).
