Atlantic and Pacific Oceans (Lindeman in Carpenter 2003); Bahía Santa Maria, southern Baja California (Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California) to Peru, including Gulf of California (De La Cruz-Agüero et al. 1997). Depth: 1–75 m (3–246 ft) (min.: Gonzáles-Acosta et al. 1999; max.: Robertson and Allen 2002). Lindeman in Carpenter (2003) notes that the taxonomic status of this species is unresolved.
