Islas San Benito and Natividad, central Baja California (Ramírez-Valdez et al. 2015); mainland Pacific Baja California as far north as Laguna de San Ignacio, southern Baja California (De La Cruz-Agüero and Cota-Gómez 1998) and Gulf of California (Allen and Robertson 1994) to Pucusana, Peru (Chirichigno and Vélez 1998) and Islas Galápagos (Grove and Lavenberg 1997). Depth: less than 2 m to 50 m (7–164 ft) (min.: Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California; max.: Craig et al. 2011). Alphestes galapagensis Fowler, 1944 is a synonym.
