MOMA: Modular Ocean Model Configuration off Mauretania

MOMA is a general ocean circulation model configuration covering most of the North Atlantic subtropical gyre. The code, settings and configuration is identical (except for the domain, resolution and forcing) to MOMBA (doi:0.5194/gmd-7-1713-2014) and similar to MOMSO (doi:10.5194/gmd-13-71-2020). The...

The underlying framework is GFDL's Modular Ocean Model. The horizontal resolution telescopes to 1.5km in the Upwelling region off Mauretania ( 20°-15°W; 14°-22°N ) and thereby resolves (some) mesoscale features. In total MOMA features 1427 x 1159 x 75 grid points. The boundaries are solid walls. There is no restoring. Temperature & salinity initial conditions are from the World Ocean Atlas 2009 (Locarnini et al. 2009; Antonov et al. 2010). The simulation starts from rest. The Atmospheric forcing is COREv2; Large & Yeager, 2004. The topography is interpolated from ETOPO5. All depths greater than 1500m are capped which facilitates the use of longer (barotropic) timesteps. The movies archived here start after a spin-up period of 6 months. The dates indicated in the movies are nominal because the forcing is climatological. The archived files are showing daily averages of: airSea_heat.mov shows simulated air-sea heat fluxes in units W/m2 MLD.mov shows simulated surface mixed layer depth calculated with a \(\Delta T = 0.5^\circ C\) temperature criterium in units m. speedAtSurface.mov shows simulated surface current speed in units cm/s. SSS.mov shows simulated sea surface salinity in units PSU. SST.mov shows simulated sea surface temperature in units \(^\circ C\). The grey and black contours denote positive and negative simulated sea surface height (contour interval 2cm), respectively. The model configuration is available upon request. Antonov, J.
