North, Central and Eastern Europe. Missing from most of the Mediterranean region and the whole of SW Europe. Habitat Obligate subcorticole found on a wide variety of trees, although some species seem to be favoured, especially Fagus sylvatica . In Sweden, however, the most frequent ‘host’ is Populus tremula in the Rhein-Main region of Germany, it is Alnus glutinosa. Common on Populus tremula in Belarus (Tarasevich 1992). It may occasionally be found on the ground and has been taken in pitfall traps, even in grassland, perhaps during dispersal. It occurs in the southern taiga, broad-leaved and mixed forests as well as the northern forest-steppe. Remarks Parthenogenetic in the western, northern, eastern and southern parts of its large range, bisexual in the centre; areas of overlap where both forms occur are so far located in Denmark, the Netherlands, western Germany and Lithuania (Enghoff 1976, 1994; Hoy Jensen et al. 2002).
