Etymology Gargantua is a giant and one of the main characters in the tales of François Rabelais, such as ‘La vie très horrifique du grand Gargantua, père de Pantagruel’. The name, which is a noun in apposition, alludes to the huge size of the species, which is the largest known Epimeria species.
