In EXP1, we mask out the surface geostrophic velocity between 120-180°W and 69-81°N since 2003 by storing the sea surface height to zero. In EXP2, the effect of Mendeleev Ridge and Chukchi Plateau is eliminated via smoothing the bathymetry. All the experiments are forced by 3-hourly sea surface wind speed, temperature, humidity, precipitation, pressure, and downward short- and long-wave radiation obtained from the ERA-5. Note that humidity is not archived directly in ERA datasets but can be calculated from surface temperature, dew point temperature, and surface pressure.
