Description
Summary:Figure 1. Images of emperor penguin tobogganing over hard snow, viewed from left-hand side (website 2, Table 1). Key: S = snow, LF = left flipper, LL = left leg, RL = right leg, T = tail. Arrows indicate direction of limb movements. A. left flipper is in contact distally with snow and is moving tailwards in power stroke; left leg is in recovery stroke with flexed knee, while right leg is part way through powerstroke. B. left flipper is at end of power stroke, while left leg is at end of recovery stroke with knee extended. C. left flipper is moving headwards above the substratum in recovery stroke while left leg is close to end of power stroke.
