It winters in the area stretching from southern Alaska, the Great Lakes and Nova Scotia, to northern Mexico. In Europe, isolated specimens of the species are sporadically reported. In Poland, until 2009, the presence of the bufflehead was reported 3 times (Wielkopolskie [Greater Poland] and Lower Silesia Provinces), but it is not certain whether these were natural occurrences, because this species is a commonly kept in aviculture as an ornamental bird.
