One of Herman Moll's most famous maps, often referred to as The Beaver Map for its elaborate engraved inset depicting and describing beavers building a dam. This map shows the British territories in North America and includes four inset maps: "The Gulf of Mexico"; "A Map of the Improved Part of Carolina"; "A Draught of Ye Town and Harbour of Charles-Town"; "a Map of the Principal Part of North America." There are numerous blocks of texts describing various features and intellectual interests such as the Iroquois Nation, and the postal routes of the colonies, and the recent restrictions placed on French fishing off the coast of Newfoundland. Of some interest, Moll, despite his well documented anti-French and pro-British bias, chose to label Lake Ontario as "Frontignac Lake," a name used by some French cartographers.
