Tropical Orchids Found By Botanist in Alaska WISEMAN, Alaska, Sept. 1 (/P)--Far from the tropics, where they nourish, four varieties of orchids are growing near this arctic circle village. Edith Scammon, Harvard University botanist, discovered the dainty, beautiful parasite plants on trees. Two varieties are popularly known as "Lady's Slippers" and "Lady's Tresses," and the other two are fringed orchids, she said. In 11 days Miss Scammon said she found 100 "distinctly different" flowering plants and 30 varieties of rushes and grasses. She preserved the specimens and will classify them at the Gray Herbarium at Harvard.
