SEATTLE, Wash. - (AP) - Experiments in growing berries in Alaska will be made next summer by the Alaska division of the United States, bureau of education. Large cranberries grown in western Washington will be shipped to Besboro island, in Norton sound, southeast of Nome. Native cranberries, which grow over much of At ska., are especially abundant there. The native berry is small, but hardy, and by introduction of the Washington product the bureau hopes to grow a hardy but larger cranberry in Alaska. Himalayan blackberries will be introduced on a small island off southeastern Alaska in another effort to provide more fruits for the territory.; Many of the islands of the Aleutian; chain are south of Ketchikan and have a mild climate suitable for blackberries. some of the Aleutian islands will be made also. Some of the birch and willows of the Ketchikan district will be planted in , valleys of several islands. Years ago Russians planted some trees, .mostly pine, in rocky places, but because they were either too close together or in shallow soil they attained little growth. The bureau will confine its activities conditions are favorable for timber growth.
