Reindeer Meat From Alaska. Alaska, according to the educational bureau, may soon become capable of supplying the Pacific cities of their meat. This is owing to the growth ot the reindeer industry. The first of these deer were imported from Siberia calculated that they number nearly 100,000. The new industry has given the Indians occupation and made many of the prosperous. Distibution of the deer is done by means of apprentices. At the end of a year's work with a herd the 'prentice receives six deer, eight more at the close of his second year, and 10 more at the end of the third and Then, if all has gone well, he has at least 34 deer, up for himself. Reindeer fairs are held annually. About 85 herds are maintained in western Alaska between Point Barrow andthe Aleutian islands. Soon the region along the government's railway and along the Kuskwokim is to be stocked. In June of 1916 the herds and profits had a value of $2,232,843. This year the exportation of Alaskan deer meat is to be done on a larger scale than over before.
